Autumn is here. Fall is perfect for a trip to Long Island. It's time for harvest festivals, county fairs, and celebrating Halloween. Here are some fun activities in Long Island.
Grande Festa Italiana
The festival is an annual, end-of-summer tradition in Port Washington. If you're visiting Long Island with your family, you won't want to miss the festival that features traditional, Italian food and a variety of ethnic foods from many countries. The midway features rides for little and big kids. Live entertainment includes a tribute to U.S. First Responders and Troops, and there's a spectacular fireworks display on Saturday night. The Grand Festa Italiana is held at North Hempstead Beach Park.
Hallockville Fall Festival and Craft Show
One of Long Island's best places to visit in the fall is the Hallockville Museum Farm located in Riverhead. The historic farm teaches kids and adults about the agricultural history of Long Island. Kids love meeting the animals that live on the farm and trying their hand at old-time crafts. The festival features demonstrations of weaving, spinning yarn, rug hooking, woodworking, quilting, and weaving. More than 50 craft vendors are on-hand. There are livestock displays and a model train exhibit.
Southampton September Fest
Southampton celebrates food, history, music, and art at one of the region's favorite events. Visitors come to explore the culture and heritage of the region. The festival features live music in places around the village, concerts in the park, dance, artwork, face painting, and delicious food from East End caterers and restaurants. Local volunteers dress in period costumes to add to the festivities. Southampton Fest runs from October 13th through October 15th with a Cocktail Party to kick off the event.
Hiking and Apple Picking
Long Island has scenic nature trails that are beautiful in the fall. Some of the best trails are the Nature Conservancy Upland Farm trail with a display of color from the oak, cedar, and hickory trees. Oyster Bay National Wildlife Refuge is a fun place to take the kids, and Garvies Point Preserve runs down to a secluded beach. Long Island's many farms are the place to pick your own apples.
Halloween On Long Island
Fall on Long Island is time for corn mazes, pumpkin picking, and celebrating Halloween. Long Island has some of the best Halloween events in the area. Deepwell's Mansion in St. James, was built in 1845 and is the site of a lot of paranormal activity. During October, Deepwell's Haunted Mansion is one of Long Island's scariest locations, and visitors have to find their way through the dimly lighted mansion while encountering ghosts and ghouls. The mansion is open on October 22nd, 28th, 29th, and 30th. HorseAbility Haunted Hay Barn in Old Westbury features 13 haunted rooms in the circa 1914 barns.
